State Championship venue change!

Rain is always welcome at cyclocross events; especially state championships. But too much rain fell in an area where very little rain makes big lakes so we have had to move the Arizona State Championship Cyclocross race to a different venue. This week’s race will be held at Cave Creek at Cactus Park . This is the same venue we used for the November 20th race, Cactus Cross, race.

Do not park in the church parking lot that lies to the east of the venue. If the park’s lot is full then there is parking to the north off of Larkspur or a an elementary school a few blocks east of the park on Cactus.

Thanks to everyone for understanding that we are at the mercy of the weather as well as the municipalities that allow us to race in the parks. Special thanks to the city of Phoenix parks and the Northwest Division for putting a fast track permit through so we could race this weekend.

2011 Artisan Prosthetics/AZCross Series

Six out of the seven races in the Artisan Prosthetics/AZCross series are in the books. Only the state championships remain and some of the categories are going down to the wire. The winners in the Men’s Open, Cat 3/4 and Cat 4 categories might be sewn up but second and third are not done deals. There are still podium spots up for grabs and with them some pretty sweet schwag! The two tightest races are the Master Men 35+ and Women’s open. Both have been tight all year and will come down to this one race. I know how bad Mark and Marissa want the win in their respective categories so look to both of those races to be hotly contested Saturday morning.

SMA Smackdown on Kino

The SMA Smackdown on Kino marked a return of cyclocross racing to Tucson. It had been at least 5 years since there was a USAC cyclocross race held in the old Pueblo and this past weekend ended the drought. Azcross provided some logistical support and helped with the physical assets to facilitate a race but it was Chris Ramsey and Dan Maher that did the lion’s share of the work. Fact is Tucson would still be cyclocross free if it wasn’t for those guys doing all the legwork and assembling a group of people to make the race happen. When you see them say thanks and make sure you mean it so we can get some more races down there next year.

For those that didn’t make the trip you missed one of the best courses we have had the chance to race. The early morning fog and sloppy conditions made the atmosphere perfect but the challenging 2 mile course made the race fun. A sand pit with two big humps in it, a run up, and a set of doubles all added to an undulating natural terrain to create a course that had the racers constantly doing something. There were very few spots to rest and some spots that if you weren’t with someone else you were really going to suffer in the wind.

CX Magazine posted 3 photos I took at the USGP Louisville this past weekend including Ryan Trebon putting on a Pioneer S-M mustache on his headtube. As well, I got Georgia Gould to use her heckling megaphone to call out Steve McNamee of Artisan Prosthetics BY NAME! Steve must have been doing something right to get a call out from Georgia. I actually got Georgia to heckle Wayne Gorry as well!

Freestone Cross

Thanks to everyone that came out to race and spectate at Freestone Cross! We had big crowds all day and our biggest racer turnout in 5 years of putting on races. The course was short and fast with what seemed like an interminably long run-up, unless of course you were able to hop the barrier at the bottom. It was all easily viewed from the hill to the north of the start finish so it was consistently packed. A bunch of first timers came out to take advantage of the first race free program. We hope that the cyclocross bug bit you and you stick with it. There are plenty more opportunities to race this year. The demo bikes provided by Raleigh were also a big success. Almost every race had a demo bike in it and in a few races all 5 were out on course! Thanks again for the patience shown by the cat 4s after it took awhile to sort out the results from your race.

Freestone Cross Online Registration

Please note that the online registration for this weekend’s Freestone Cross race is closing on Wednesday at 7:00 pm. Due to a prior commitment by our registration partner, La Roue d’Or, we need to close online registration earlier than normal. You know you want to come out and race and you hate the day of fees so just go ahead and register!

We have received 5 demo bikes and they are safely in the AZCROSS.COM trailer!

We have 2-53cm / 2-55cm / 1-57cm bike to let racers demo AT the ACROSS.COM races. These bikes will be available on a first-come-first-served basis at the AZCROSS.COM races. We are psyched to have this opportunity by Raleigh to bring you cyclocross bikes you can tryout and and take in the full cyclocross experience. As we have posted the additional races on our calander, these bikes will be only traveling to the AZCROSS.COM produced races denoted below:
