Night Ripper This Saturday

This Saturday the NIGHT RIPPER at Crossroads Park in Gilbert is going off! Racing starts at 5:20 with the cat 4 men and Master Men 35+ races and rolls on through to the Cat 3/4 men starting at 7:50. Come out and race or come out and spectate but make sure to come out and have a great time.

Flag Double Cross Roundup

The Flagstaff Double Cross weekend is in the books!

Thanks to everyone that made the drive up from Tucson and Phoenix and I hope that the Flag guys and gals enjoyed the chance to race in their home city. The courses were certainly challenging and different from the normal course we run at the Phoenix and Tucson races. It was really nice to see some of the old familiar faces return and even better to see some new CX blood out there mixing it up. My vote for ride of the weekend goes to Zach Keller for crushing the men’s open race Sunday!

A special thanks goes out to John Sawasky for helping to put the course together in the weeks leading up to the race. He also capped off his weekend with a first place in the men’s open race Saturday and second on Sunday. Thanks, John!

Welcome back! We have several new courses including a doubleheaders in Flagstaff AND Tucson. We are introducing a new course in Glendale, AZ with a couple uphills you might enjoy. We look forward to continuing our relationship with previous sponsors and adding new sponsors to the AZCROSS.COM family. We have completed 6 years of cylcocross in Arizona and as the Premiere series we promise to provide you with the most challenging and unique courses as well as an atmosphere of camaraderie as well as the best prizes and cash payouts around! State Championship venue change!

Rain is always welcome at cyclocross events; especially state championships. But too much rain fell in an area where very little rain makes big lakes so we have had to move the Arizona State Championship Cyclocross race to a different venue. This week’s race will be held at Cave Creek at Cactus Park . This is the same venue we used for the November 20th race, Cactus Cross, race.

Do not park in the church parking lot that lies to the east of the venue. If the park’s lot is full then there is parking to the north off of Larkspur or a an elementary school a few blocks east of the park on Cactus.

Thanks to everyone for understanding that we are at the mercy of the weather as well as the municipalities that allow us to race in the parks. Special thanks to the city of Phoenix parks and the Northwest Division for putting a fast track permit through so we could race this weekend.

2011 Artisan Prosthetics/AZCross Series

Six out of the seven races in the Artisan Prosthetics/AZCross series are in the books. Only the state championships remain and some of the categories are going down to the wire. The winners in the Men’s Open, Cat 3/4 and Cat 4 categories might be sewn up but second and third are not done deals. There are still podium spots up for grabs and with them some pretty sweet schwag! The two tightest races are the Master Men 35+ and Women’s open. Both have been tight all year and will come down to this one race. I know how bad Mark and Marissa want the win in their respective categories so look to both of those races to be hotly contested Saturday morning.

SMA Smackdown on Kino

The SMA Smackdown on Kino marked a return of cyclocross racing to Tucson. It had been at least 5 years since there was a USAC cyclocross race held in the old Pueblo and this past weekend ended the drought. Azcross provided some logistical support and helped with the physical assets to facilitate a race but it was Chris Ramsey and Dan Maher that did the lion’s share of the work. Fact is Tucson would still be cyclocross free if it wasn’t for those guys doing all the legwork and assembling a group of people to make the race happen. When you see them say thanks and make sure you mean it so we can get some more races down there next year.

For those that didn’t make the trip you missed one of the best courses we have had the chance to race. The early morning fog and sloppy conditions made the atmosphere perfect but the challenging 2 mile course made the race fun. A sand pit with two big humps in it, a run up, and a set of doubles all added to an undulating natural terrain to create a course that had the racers constantly doing something. There were very few spots to rest and some spots that if you weren’t with someone else you were really going to suffer in the wind.

CX Magazine posted 3 photos I took at the USGP Louisville this past weekend including Ryan Trebon putting on a Pioneer S-M mustache on his headtube. As well, I got Georgia Gould to use her heckling megaphone to call out Steve McNamee of Artisan Prosthetics BY NAME! Steve must have been doing something right to get a call out from Georgia. I actually got Georgia to heckle Wayne Gorry as well!
